The Courier Receives Commendation From The BHUSD Board Of Education
The Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education unnanimously commended The Courier for its extraordinary service to the district, its students and staff at their regular meeting Tuesday, Nov. 24.
The resolution, presented by board President Nooshin Meshkaty, honors The Courier for its dedication to the community and school district over it’s 40-plus years in print.
“I think (the resolution) is very well deserved and we all join in congratulating The Courier,” said Board of Education Vice President Myra Lurie. She further praised The Courier for its many trusted years in the City, calling it better read than either the L.A. Times or The Wall Street Journal and the authority for local news.
In particular, Courier publisher Clif Smith was recognized for his commitment to local public education.
“Clif, your dedication to our school district has been absolutely outstanding,” said board member Steven Fenton. “I know what an advocate you are for public education you are throughout the state and I can’t thank you enough. Congratulations.”
The resolution states:
Whereas, The Beverly Hills Courier has been a trusted community newspaper in the city of Beverly Hills for many years;
Whereas, The Beverly Hills Courier has demonstrated its commitment to public education, to the Beverly Hills Unified School District, and to the students in this district;
Whereas, The Beverly Hills Courier has supported various District projects such as the sponsoring of teachers to attend our Foundation’s fund raisers, underwriting the new high school scoreboard, assisting in the formation of the Beverly Hills Athletic Alumni Association and has served for four years as a corporate sponsor of the Beverly Hills Education Foundation.
Whereas, the journalistic history of The Beverly Hills Courier and the volunteer efforts of its publisher Clifton Smith in support of our schools attest to their unwavering commitment to youth, public education, civic responsibility and the importance of “giving back;”
Now, therefore, be it resolved, that the Beverly Hills Unified School District Board of Education does hereby thank and honor The Beverly Hills Courier, its publisher Clifton Smith and its staff members for their support of this district and its students with this resolution presented this twenty-fourth day of November 2009.
“The Beverly Hills School District really is the crown jewel of the City,” said Smith. “Our job at the newspaper is to promote in as much as we can in good conscience the benefits and the value of our school district. Also, at times, with a loving a hand as we can, point out the deficiencies so they can be addressed. I want to commend the school district for working their way through these difficult times. It’s a real tribute to the citizens and the whole team. We certainly view ourselves as part of the team. This is deeply appreciated.”
