Doctor Takes Cutting-Edge Approach To Treating Depression

With his multi-modal and cutting-edge approach, Dr. John Deirmenjian is helping depression patients get better.

Dr. Deirmenjian is the first psychiatrist in Beverly Hills to offer transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), chosen by CNN as one of the top 10 health innovations of 2009.

The treatment uses electromagnetic fields, similar to those produced by an MRI machine. During TMS therapy, a current is administered in short pulses to the part of the brain research has demonstrated to be associated with depression.

The magnetic field produces an electric current in the brain that stimulates the release of neurostransmitters like serotonin and norepinephrine and is thought to “affect deeper structures within the limbic system that regulate mood.”

FDA approved, NeuroStar TMS Therapy is a viable alternative for patients who have not responded well to antidepressant medications, have tried multiple medications over a period of time, and those whose who can’t tolerate medications’ side effects which often include weight gain and sexual dysfunction.

At the TMS Center of Beverly Hills, patients sit under a coil that rests gently just above the left forehead. The non-invasive treatment requires no anesthesia or sedation and there is basically no radiation, Deir-menjian said. The typical initial course of treatment is about 37 minutes daily over four to six weeks.

His results have been phenomenal, Deir-menjian says, prompting him to buy a second machine and open a Long Beach office. Patients who have been been suffering for six to eight years have seen improvement. One patient went into full remission after the eighth treatment, Deirmenjian said.

Deirmenjian, on the clinical faculty at UCLA, sees the treatment as part of a customized comprehensive approach for each patient that incorporates psychotherapy, diet and exercise, and medication management. Since most of his patients also have other psychotherapists he coordinates care with them to better serve patients.

TMS Beverly Hills is at 9171 Wilshire Blvd., Suite 630.
