South Bay students face charges from hosting alcohol-sodden parties
Two students at a South Bay language school face criminal charges stemming from a rape and a death that occurred during a pair of alcohol-sodden parties for underage foreign students, it was reported today.
The Daily Breeze reported that the school, EF International Language School in Redondo Beach, has drawn the attention of Redondo Beach police because its underage students were involved in a long series of unsanctioned drunken parties attended by teenagers from around the world who enroll there to learn English.
One party involved a charter bus with an open bar that took students, all under the drinking age of 21, to a Hollywood dance club earlier this month.
It resulted in a teenaged boy from Denmark being stranded, staggeringly drunk, next to the Harbor (110) Freeway in South Los Angeles, where he was killed as he tried to cross 14 lanes of 65 mph freeway to walk home.
Another earlier party resulted in the rape of an intoxicated 20-year-old woman from South Korea, the newspaper reported.
“Obviously, when you have a really young kids drinking copious amounts, bad things happen,’ Redondo Beach police Sgt. Phil Keenan told the newspaper. “There has got to be some culpability in this.’
The latest and most-serious incident occurred Oct. 10, when Mikkel Christian Andersen, a 17-year-old boy from Denmark, had a .27 blood alcohol level when a alcohol-laden party bus stopped at Imperial Highway at the Harbor Freeway to let people vomit and urinate.
The bus had been hired by a student from France, Jeremy Michelren Touche, 22, who charged $35 a head for transportation to a Hollywood dance club and all the beer, vodka, rum, and other drinks anyone wanted, according to a 20 -year-old female student who was on it.
One girl reportedly took ecstasy pill.
Because the bus company, Whittier-based Luxury Sports, charges extra if people vomit onboard its fleet, the party bus had stopped at a freeway-side gas station.
But it left without the 17-year-old boy, stranding him in a drunken state at 2 a.m. in one of the most-crime-infected corners in all of Los Angeles, about 15 miles from his apartment near the school in Redondo Beach.
“We are not a school bus where we have to do a head count,’ said the bus company’s owner, Sal Zamora, in an interview with the Daily Breeze. “He got left behind because his friends or the people who rented that bus on that particular night forgot about him.’
The 17-year-old was killed when he apparently dashed across the freeway to walk home.
He had been in the U.S. just two weeks, The student who organized the event, Jeremy Michekren Touche, was arrested Thursday, The Daily Breeze said.
He was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, serving alcohol to a minor, and serving alcohol without a state license. He could face six months in jail.
Earlier this year, a drunken 20-year-old woman from South Korea became separated from the other students and was raped.
A student from Venezulea, Jember Alfonso Martelo-Oca, 20, was charged with was charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, serving alcohol to a minor, serving alcohol without a state license, and operating a business without a license, according to Redondo Beach prosecutor Brenda Wells.
Hector Lopez, 19, has been charged with the rape, the newspaper reported.“
