Woman Gets Prison Term For Abusing 5-Year-Old Daughter Killed By Mom’s Boyfriend
A Van Nuys woman was sentenced today to nearly three decades in prison for failing to protect her 5-year-old daughter, who was sexually assaulted, tortured and fatally beaten by the mother’s live-in boyfriend in November 2004.
San Fernando Superior Court Judge Beverly Reid O’Connell ordered Debby Saravia, 32, to serve 28 years and eight months in state prison.
Saravia pleaded no contest Jan. 26 to child abuse, including the allegation that the abuse resulted in the death of her daughter Desarie, according to Deputy District Attorney Mary Sedgwick.
Saravia also pleaded no contest as an aider and abettor to one count of forcible sexual penetration with a foreign object involving her daughter, along with an attempted murder charge involving her 6-year-old son.
Saravia’s boyfriend, Antonio Rodriguez, was sentenced Sept. 2 to death for the girl’s slaying, with Judge Ronald S. Coen saying that it was a “brutal murder of a 5-year-old girl left in his care’ and that “the maximum sentence was warranted.’
Saravia knew the children were being physically abused by Rodriguez, but did nothing to stop him, according to the prosecutor.
