Reality television star Kim Kardashian filed for divorce today from her husband of 72 days, NBA player Kris Humphries.
In her Los Angeles Superior Court papers, Kardashian, 31, cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split from her 26-year-old husband.
The couple were married Aug. 20 in a lavish made-for-television ceremony in Montecito attended by a list of celebs, including Eva Longoria, Lindsay Lohan, Mario Lopez, George Lopez and Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds.
According to the court papers, the couple had a prenuptial agreement.
The divorce will be the second for Kardashian.
In a statement to E! News, Kardashian said, “After careful consideration, I have decided to end my marriage. I hope everyone understands that this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don’t work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best.”
According to various media reports, Kardashian’s marriage to Humphries earned the couple as much as $18 million, with the ceremony filmed for a four- hour, two-part special on E! Entertainment titled “Kim’s Fairytale Wedding: A Kardashian Event.”
The rapid divorce by the reality show star quickly drew the attention of some activists pushing for legalization of same-sex marriage.
Same-sex marriage advocate George Takei, best known for playing Sulu on “Star Trek,” posted sarcastically on his Twitter page, “Kim Kardashian files for divorce after 72 days. Another example of how same-sex marriage is destroying the sanctity of the very institution.”
