‘Hunger Games’ Not Appeased at the Box Office

“The Hunger Games”continued to eat up the box office revenue this weekend, with the first big blockbuster of the year gobbling up $61.1 million in estimated admission fees.

Studio reports gathered by indicate that the Lionsgate blockbuster has sold $251 million worth of admission tickets in two weeks of exhibition.

“The Hunger Games” showed “an impressively-small drop considering the huge debut last weekend,” said movie industry analyst Paul Dergerabedian at “Great word-of mouth continues, and (it is) now the highest grossing film released in 2012.”

A pair of new releases grabbed the numbers two and three spots this weekend: “Wrath Of Titans” with a $34.2 million debut, and “Mirror Mirror” with a $19 million show.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular films this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by, were “21 Jump Street” ($15 million), “Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax” ($8 million), “John Carter” ($2 million), “Salmon Fishing In The Yemen”($1.3 million), “Act Of Valor” ($1 million), “A Thousand Words” ($915,000) and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” ($835,000).
