MTV VMA 2012 Nominees Announced

Rihanna and Drake each earned five nominations today to lead the list of hopefuls for the MTV Video Music Awards, which will be presented in September at Staples Center.

Rihanna was nominated twice in the top category of video of the year, once for her solo effort “We Found Love” and once for her collaboration with Drake on “Take Care.” Also up for the top prize are Katy Perry for “Wide Awake,” Gotye for “Somebody That I Used to Know” and M.I.A. for “Bad Girls.”

The Drake-Rihanna combination on “Take Care” was also nominated for best male video, while Rihanna’s “We Found Love” was nominated for best female video.

Justin Bieber also landed a nomination for best male video for “Boyfriend,” as did Frank Ocean for “Swim Good,” Chris Brown for “Turn Up the Music” and Usher for “Climax.”

Competing with Rihanna for best female video will be Katy Perry for “Part of Me,” Beyonce for “Love on Top,” Nicki Minaj for “Starships” and Selena Gomez & The Scene for “Love You Like a Love Song.”

Alicia Keys is scheduled to host the Sept. 6 ceremony, and she is also among those expected to perform. The group One Direction, a nominee for best new artist, is also expected to perform.

Viewers can cast ballots in general VMA categories online at vma.mtv.com or at m.mtv.com on mobile devices. Voting in all categories will end at 6 p.m. Aug. 24, except for the best new artist category, for which voting will continue through the Sept. 6 show.
