Thousands Expected for WeHo Halloween Carnaval This Evening

As many as a half-million costumed revelers are expected to descend on Santa Monica Boulevard tonight as West Hollywood presents its annual Halloween Carnaval, billed as one of the world’s largest Halloween celebrations.

The West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval, which runs from 6 to 11 p.m. on Santa Monica Boulevard between Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard, will feature three stages of live entertainment.

The main stage — The Drag Hotel of Horrors stage — will be at Santa Monica and San Vicente boulevards and feature a rock ‘n’ roll drag show including burlesque, pyrotechnic displays, and performances by bands such as Tranzcontinental, Helles Belles and Fire Groove.

The Dungeon of Sin stage at Santa Monica and Almont Drive will feature the Sideshow Sirens, Barbie’s Addiction and Vaud and the Villains. The Thrills and Chills stage will be at Santa Monica and La Cienega Boulevard, with performances by Zen Freeman, The Orchestre Surreal and Miss BarbiqQLA.

There will also be three smaller DJ stages.

Actor Donovan Leitch Jr., who plays Hedwig in the glam-rock musical “Hedwig and the Angry Itch” and is the son of 1960s folk singer Donovan, will be the honorary mayor of the Carnaval. The musical tells the story of an East German transgender rock star and her search for love.

To make way for the Carnaval, some West Hollywood streets will be closed for most of the day, meaning motorists should steer clear. Here is a list of planned street closures, with all expected to open by 6 a.m. Thursday, unless noted:

— San Vicente Boulevard between Melrose Avenue and Santa Monica will be closed all day, reopening at 7 a.m. Thursday;

— Santa Monica between Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard, including all side streets, will close at noon;

— Robertson Boulevard between Melrose and Santa Monica will close at noon;

— Almont Drive and La Peer Drive will be closed from Santa Monica to Melrose at noon.

— San Vicente between Cynthia Street and Santa Monica will close at noon;

— Santa Monica between La Cienega Boulevard and Holloway Drive/Croft Avenue will close at 4 p.m.

— La Cienega between Sunset Boulevard and Santa Monica will close at 4 p.m.

— The Sunset east and westbound turn lanes onto La Cienega will close at 4 p.m.

West Hollywood will suspend permit parking restrictions beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing until 6 a.m. Thursday. Parking meters will be enforced. All parking restrictions must be observed in neighboring Beverly Hills and Los Angeles.

Parking will be available in various West Hollywood city-operated structures and lots — for a $20 parking fee. Information about parking lots is available at the city’s website, www.weho.org.

Special CityLine shuttle bus service will run between 5:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. The route will operate along Santa Monica Boulevard between La Cienega Boulevard and Fuller Avenue, and on Sunset Boulevard between La Cienega and Horn Avenue.

The festival hotline is (323) 848-6503.
