Beverly Hills High Football Head Coach Donald Paysinger has resigned, Athletic Director Jason Newman confirmed Monday to The Courier.

“We are moving in a new direction,” Newman told The Courier. “(Donald) is a very competent football coach… so although we didn’t have as much success last year we would have liked, we don’t think Donald forgot how to coach. We just didn’t have it… there were all these reasons, but we weren’t a good team last year.”

Paysinger held the top post for Beverly Hills High’s football team the last four years, compiling a 14-27 record over that span. Since making the playoffs in 2010, however, the team compiled a pair of back-to-back 2-8 seasons.

One key factor in Paysinger’s decision to resign, Newman said, was the graduation of his son Cameron.

Newman acknowledged that a lack of players was an issue in the football team’s struggles over the past few years.

“It’s a little bit of an uneven playing field, because there are still schools allowing permit students… it’s a fact of high school athletics in the Southland,” Newman said. “But there’s no question, there’s nothing wrong with the athletes here in Beverly Hills. The only isue is depth.. but there’s a youth pop warner football league that has started and there’s a lot of interest in that.”

Newman said the new coach would “most likely” be brought on as a walk-on coach, meaning they wouldn’t be hired for a full-time staff position. He said the job had to remain open for a certain amount of time on the Californai Interscholastic Federation (CIF) website before it could be filled, but that the school expected to have a coach in place by spring practice.

“We’ve had a history of football coaches who both provide leadership in terms of our athletic competition and strong leadership in developing young people in education,” Newman said. “We’re going to look to continue the standard that Carter (Paysinger) and Donald provided.”
