Rand Paul Blasts Hollywood Over Gun Control “Hypocrisy”

Senator Rand Paul has chosen a new target in his fight against gun control legislation: Hollywood.

In a Thursday appearance on Fox News’ “Hannity,” the Kentucky Republican asserted that there was “a certain amount of hypocrisy” in the fact that Hollywood celebrities who have come out in favor of gun control also make use of armed bodyguards for their personal protection.

“I think when you are being protected by people who have weapons, I can’t see why you would be opposed to that for other people,” Paul said.  “Many rich Hollywood celebrities have armed guards with them at all times and many regular people who live in a poor neighborhood that may have higher crime… have to suffer the vicissitudes of violent crime without protection sometimes because of gun control laws. So, yes, I think there is a certain amount of hypocrisy.”

As reported by Politico, Senator Paul further stated that while he did not “begrudge” high-profile elected officials for availing themselves of armed security, he questioned those officials’ decision to support laws that would deny similar protection to private citizens.

“I don’t begrudge any famous person like Mayor Bloomberg, or the president or the president’s family for having protection — I think they all should. There’s enough crazy people out there that would attack on the right or the left. But I think when you are being protected by people who have weapons, I can’t see why you would be opposed to that for other people,” Paul said.

Along with fellow Senate Republicans Ted Cruz and Mike Lee, Senator Paul has spearheaded the GOP’s resistance to the gun reform legislative package that Democrats are reportedly preparing to bring before Congress later this year.  Earlier this week, the three Republican senators sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), stating their intention to filibuster any legislation brought before the Senate that would “infringe on the American people’s right to bear arms.”
