Rabbi Mendel Tevel appeared in a Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday after a 2-day delay. Tevel was arrested Tuesday on 11 counts of alleged sexual abuse of minors in New York. The rabbi is being held pending extradition to New York.
Tevel was handcuffed and wearing a blue jumpsuit. He waived his right to fight his extradition. New York law enforcement officials have until Dec. 2 to retrieve him.
Dana Cole, Tevel’s attorney, asked that the court consider bail for her client based on his restrictive kosher diet and the fact that he does not have a record in California.
Tevel’s wife Bracha and father-in-law, Rabbi Hertzel Illulian, were in the courtroom. Rabbi Illulian is the founder and director of the JEM youth center in Beverly Hills where Tevel was employed and where police arrested him.
