Beverly Hills News – Oscars Protest

Dozens of Los Angeles security officers and supporters protested today at the site of Sunday’s Oscars ceremony, urging the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to use a security contractor that offers full-time jobs and the choice to form a union.

About 50 people staged an afternoon rally on the red carpet in front of the Hollywood & Highland complex in Hollywood, where the Oscars will take place on Sunday in the center’s Dolby Theatre.

“Hopefully these officers will get the proper hours,” said Robert Branch, a member of SEIU United Service Workers West and a security officer. “They get paid seemingly OK, but they need better hours and benefits and a union just like many at the Screen Actors Guild and folks who work in Hollywood.”

The Oscars will be presented in a ceremony hosted for the second time by Ellen DeGeneres.
