SiliconBeachClearly: Border Grill Teams Up With Monterey County CVB for Two Culinary Events

Border Grill Chef/Owners Susan Feniger and Mary Sue Milliken are teaming up with the Monterey County CVB to bring two special events to SoCal. Both are a natural extension of the duo’s existing commitment to the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Program, which spreads the gospel of sustainable seafood. As such, Border Grill exclusively serves seafood that falls into that category, from popular types like salmon to the lesser-seen barramundi.

For six days only, the two Border Grill food trucks will expand their menus and serve the new Monterey Fresh Taco. Note that it’s fresh, not fish (a lot of people are misreading it). In fact, the dish is 100 percent vegetarian. It will consist of garlic from Gilroy garlic-braised portobello, Honey Garden cabbage, pickled Torpedo onions and parsnip chips. The masa-based tacos themselves are all handmade from Monterey corn.

The special tacos will only be available at the trucks thru May 25. Note that 20 percent of the proceeds from the fresh tacos will be donated to the No Kid Hungry campaign for the Share Our Strength organization. The trucks regularly traverse the city, making stops everywhere from Fox Plaza in Century City to the Santa Fe Art Colony in DTLA. The second event is the Monterey Fresh Farm Stand, which is coming to the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica May 28 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. An outdoor event, it will be held on Third Street between Wilshire Boulevard and Arizona Avenue. Since Monterey is known as the “Salad Bowl of the World,” the produce-centric taco will again take center stage here. At the Stand, free samples of the dish will be given out to attendees.

In addition, two top Monterey chefs will join Feniger and Milliken at the event. Both Yousef Ghalaini (The Bench at Pebble Beach) and Tim Wood (Carmel Valley Ranch) will personally be preparing the Monterey Fresh Taco with ingredients from Swawk Farms.
