SiliconBeachClearly: Baja Wine Dinners at Loteria Grill
As part of Loteria’s new “Fina Stampa” series, the Hollywood and Santa Monica locations of this local mini-chain are teaming with guest Chef Javier Plascencia, of the celebrated Tijuana eatery Mision 19. Plascencia is perhaps the best-known chef from the Baja region, and Loteria’s Chef/Owner Jimmy Shaw, a Mexico City native, is a culinary ambassador in his own right. Who better to introduce a program that will spotlight the diversity of Mexican cuisine, starting with this Baja Wine Dinner. Held over the course of two nights, June 4 & 5, each meal will focus on South of the Border wines.
Beginning June 4 at the Hollywood location, the more formal of the two events will include a six-course, wine-pairing menu. As the courses are served, each will be explained, including the general history of Mexican wine (dating back 600 years), as presented by Maite Gomez-Rejón (Artbites). KCRW‘s Raúl Campos will provide the Latin soundtrack. Both Shaw and Plascencia will be greeting guests in the dining room and fielding queries about the evening’s collaborative dishes.
Among dishes on the menu will be a scallop tostada in aguachile, with Persian cucumber and pickled radish; creamy rice with goat cheese, braised lamb, Banyuls vinegar, and burnt onions; and a duck breast with mole negro, date ashes, parsnip purée, and root veggies. The meal will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $75 per person, inclusive of the wine pairings. However, tax and tip are extra.
On the following evening, festivities move west to the Santa Monica location. Here, the vibe will be more casual, with food stations, rather than a sit-down meal. Each delicious bite will be paired with wines from the region. Again, Campos will spin Latin beats to keep things lively at the Baja Wine Dinner.
Expect diverse tastes such as a pork-centric taco that will incorporate carnitas, chicharron, and bacon; a quail confit with heirloom beans in a fava bean leaf tortilla; and tostadas with filet and sirloin, plus Oaxacan cheese and chile. The “Food Fair” will be held from 4:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. The cost is $45, inclusive of of the wine pairings. Tax and tip are extra.
Upcoming events in the Fina Stampa series will include Mexican produce (August), seafood (October), and sweets (December). Exact dates are TBA. For more information or to pre-purchase tickets to the Baja Wine Dinner, visit Loteria Grill.
