I saw it in 2006, and now LA Opera is reviving Marta Domingo’s production of Giuseppe Verdi’s La Traviata, to open its 2014-15 season, on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.

Actress Kate Walsh (Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice) will host a pre-performance cocktail reception; and a formal post-performance gala, dubbed Opera Ball 2014, where celebrities and opera lovers will share an evening of glitz and glamour under the stars, will honor L.A. County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky for his commitment to the company and the arts.

The production will feature Plácido Domingo as the moral baritonal father, Georgio Germont, who is compelled to end his son’s illicit affair with the gorgeous courtesan, Violetta Valéry, to save the family’s reputation. Rising star Nino Machaidze from last season’s successful Thais plays Violetta to tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz’s Alfredo Germont. LA Opera Music Director James Conlon conducts. The opera runs through Sept. 28.

You won’t see 18th- or 19th-century ball gowns in this production— the action has been moved to the 1920s. Mirrored spinning balls, art-deco disco touches, Ziegfield Follies-type dancers and flappers grace the stage. But as always, Violetta Valéry succumbs to a dramatic death, floating across the stage into Alfredo’s arms while Papa Domingo watches on. Pathos galore.

Performances: 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13; 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 17, Tuesday, Sept. 23 and Friday, Sept. 26; and matinees at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21 and 28.
