As City employee salaries go up, so do the financial burdens the City of Beverly Hills will ask of its taxpaying residents.

The City Council agreed to a two percent water rate increase Tuesday that would go into effect in September. These rates will only be in effect for one year; drought conditions and other factors mean that another raise may be just around the corner.

Trish Rhay, assistant director of Public Works, presented the rate increase recommendation.

At present, explained Rhay, the City receives 90 percent of its water from the Metropolitan Water District (MWD); ten percent is from the City’s water treatment plant, which operates five days a week for optimal performance.
