On Tuesday, the Board of Education edged closer to making a public decision on just how it plans to complete its massive school renovation project. The school district currently only has sufficient cash from Measure E funds to complete construction of the new Horace Mann school building.

The board opted to table a vote to move forward with placing portables at the high school and entering into an agreement with HMC Architects for design services at El Rodeo until it has a study session with facilities consultant Tim Buresh to help them better understand just how far they can stretch current funds.

“We need to make a hard choice,” Board VP Howard Goldstein said. “How are we going to pay for [projects] if funds don’t exist?”

The $334 million Measure E school building bond, which voters approved in 2008, was packaged to the community with the false promise that property taxes would not be raised.
