A video released by Islamic State jihadists purportedly shows the beheading of Japanese journalist Kenji Goto amidst warnings that the Tokyo government will see “carnage wherever your people are found.”
There was no immediate word on the fate of a second Jordanian hostage, pilot Lt. Muath al-Kaseasbeh.
The gruesome video shows the second of two prisoners that ISIS was holding hostage for a $200 million and for a prisoner swap.
Goto was a 47-year-old freelance journalist and documentarian who traveled to Syria in October to search for Jaruna Yukawa, who was executed last week in the same manner.
He was captured by ISIS within hours of entering ISIS territory.
The Japanese government is in the process of authenticating the video, which is said to cut away just at the time of execution, when the executioner puts a knife to his neck. It then shows a headless body.
The video bears the same British-accented narrator.
