The Beverly Hills High School Academic Decathlon team finished #6 in California and #11 in the nation at this year’s State Final Competition, which took place in Sacramento over the weekend. The team’s score of 51,511 was the 2nd highest in school history. Last year’s BHHS team took fifth at the state competition.
“Once again, our team improvement from regionals to state finals was the highest by far of any team in California,” said Dr. Phil Chase, who has coached the BHHS team for the past four years. The Decathlon is an academic competition in which students master ten subjects at a college level, including Art, Economics, Essay-writing, Literature, Mathematics, Music, Interview Skills, Science, Social Science, and Public Speaking.
At this weekend’s competition, the nine-member BHHS team earned perfect scores in the Super Quiz (six subjects in one test), as well as in Mathematics and Interview Skills, in addition to earning medals in Economics and Science. At February’s L.A. County competition, which was held at the USC Galen Center, the students earned 53 medals.
Chase said the BHHS team began preparation last summer, and has spent hundreds of hours becoming scholars and Renaissance people. The team consists of three ‘A’ students (Honors), three ‘B’ students (Scholastic), and three ‘C’ students (Varsity).
