The City of Beverly Hills and the Friends of Beverly Gardens Park will honor The Wanda Group Friday at a ceremony to take place at the newly restored Lily Pond between Beverly and Canon Drives.
Wanda Beverly Hills Properties LLC and the group’s chairman, Wang Jianlin, have given the gift of $200,000 to jump-start the restoration of the park.
The gift comes shortly after a groundbreaking ceremony denoting the beginning of construction on the Electric Fountain restoration project. This money will be slated for the Whittier gateway block of Beverly Gardens Park.
In a press release, the City said, “This lead gift marks the beginning of Wanda’s relationship with the City of Beverly Hills. The donation will be used to restore the portion of the park adjacent to Wanda’s property located at 9900 Wilshire Boulevard. Together, Wanda’s eight-acre property and Beverly Gardens Park, form the City’s western gateway – welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors to Beverly Hills annually.”
Other major contributors to the effort include Hershenson Investments, Steven Gordon Family Foundation, Kennedy Wilson, Lili and Jon Bosse, Larry Field, Robert Zarnegin, Geoff Palmer and Cartier.
Beverly Gardens Park, built a century ago, runs the full length of Beverly Hills along Santa Monica Blvd. for 23 blocks. With that much history, the City and the Friends of Beverly Gardens Park have been raising funds to continue the restoration begun with the Lili Pond and completed in 2014.
It is hoped, said Steve Gordon, founder of FOBGP, that the organization will set up a trust that will take the parks into the next century.
The announcement will be made on Friday March 27 at 4:30 p.m. at the Lili Pond with Mayor Julian Gold (who shall be installed as Mayor Tuesday evening.)
