Gil Hill, the real-life police detective who starred alongside Eddie Murphy as his boss, Douglas Todd, in all three Beverly Hills Cop films, has died. He was 84.
Hill was admitted to DMC Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit in critical condition, suffering from pneumonia. He died at 4:40 p.m. Monday afternoon.
Hill was a real-life Detroit cop who was ‘discovered’ by director Martin Brest in 1984 when he was asked to show him around the city to scout locations. Figuring him as a natural for the part, Brest tried it out, and the rest was history.
However, Hill did not continue to act. Instead, he became head of the homicide division of the Detroit Police Department and was elected to the Detroit City Council in 1989. He also ran for mayor unsuccessfully in 2001.
Hill is predeceased by his wife Delores Hook, who passed in 2015. He is survived by three children, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
“Gil Hill spent more than 40 years serving our city in the Detroit Police Department and as a member of the Detroit City Council. He never stopped believing in our city and dedicated his life to making our city a better place for all,” said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan.
“We are relieved that his passing was peaceful and painless,” a family member told Deadline Detroit. “We ask that you pray for the family and respect our privacy during this very difficult time.”
