An unknown assailant opened fire today at an unmarked car in which an undercover Los Angeles Police Department officer was sitting in the Leimert Park area, but the officer was unhurt.
The shooting occurred around 6 a.m. near Coliseum Street and Edgehill Drive, according to the LAPD. The shots were fired at the officer by someone in a silver vehicle that sped off, said LAPD Sgt. Barry Montgomery.
The officer was on a crime-suppression assignment in the area when the shooting occurred, police said. She did not return fire, said LAPD Officer Jane Kim.
Chief Charlie Beck gave an update on the shooting to the Police Commission.
“We have one ongoing incident that’s occurring in Leimert Park at this moment,” he told the panel. “Earlier this morning a plainclothes Los Angeles police officer who happens to be African-American was seated in her vehicle as part of an operation that was being conducted in the neighborhood. She was … in a drive-by shooting. The individual fired at least five rounds, most of them striking her vehicle and narrowly missing her. She is a 10-year veteran of the police department. We are thrilled that she has survived this attack. Her father is a Los Angeles police officer, and she has a brother who is a Los Angeles police officer.”
