Supreme Court Lets LA Billboard Ruling Stand to Limit Billboards and Digital Signs

(CNS) – Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer today hailed a state Supreme Court’s decision this week that allowed the city’s billboard restrictions to stand.

The Supreme Court decided not to take up billboard company Lamar Central Outdoor’s appeal of a recent ruling that preserved the city’s the authority to create sign districts where billboards would be allowed, and to limit billboards, including digital signs, outside of those districts.

The state’s 2nd District Court of Appeals had sided with the city in March, prompting Lamar to appeal the ruling to the state Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court ultimately decided not to consider the issue, saying Lamar was asking the body “to revisit questions of law that were settled more than three decades ago.”

“This was billboard company Lamar’s last gasp in its attack on Los Angeles’s billboard ban,” Feuer said. “Now the Supreme Court has made clear our billboard ban stands.”

Feuer said the Supreme Court’s refusal to consider Lamar’s challenge represents “a great victory for our neighborhoods, heading off what would have been a torrent of new billboards inundating Los Angeles.”
