Beverly Hills News – Residents Invited to Observe Sample Pruned Tree on Parcel 13

Posted: Thursday, July 7, 2016 – 4:03 PM

The City of Beverly Hills sent out the following press release regarding the trimming of trees on Parcels 12 & 13:

The City of Beverly Hills will begin the process of trimming City-owned trees along Civic Center Drive in order to reduce the risk of falling trees and limbs. Trimming will start around 8 a.m. Mon. July 11 and the public is invited between 9:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. to observe the pruned tree, give feedback and ask questions before other trees are trimmed.

After feedback is received, the overhanging limbs in the southern section of the area known as Parcel 13 are scheduled to be trimmed beginning July 12. The project is projected to take approximately seven days.

Several arborists have expressed concerns with these trees, ranging from poor overall health to structural instability. While this work will not ensure structural stability of the trees, it will reduce the likelihood that limbs will shed onto Civic Center Drive.  Every effort will be made to preserve the aesthetic barrier provided by the trees; however, public safety is the main consideration.

The City arborist, in conjunction with an independent arborist, will oversee the pruning of the sample tree.  The public will not be permitted to enter the work zone while the sample tree is being trimmed but once the tree has been trimmed, the City arborist will answer questions regarding the specifics of the pruning.

The state Department of Toxic Substances Control has approved the work and told the City they will have a representative on site periodically. All work will be conducted from outside the fenced area. No chippers or blowers will be used and the City arborist will be present at all times while work is in progress.

Please contact Parks and Urban Forest Manager Ken Pfalzgraf at (310) 285-2537 if you have questions concerning this work.
