Sunday was the Day of Reckoning for pie bakers in Beverly Hills, who brought their precious pastries to participate in Piesta at the Farmers’ Market. It was a solemn event, with judges carefully considering the delectable delights.
The following distinguished judges held court over the pies Sunday, bringing their innate talents to the table, literally.
* Melanie Shaum, last year’s first place pie bake winner
* Annie Miler, owner of Clementine, Supporting Sponsor
* Beverly Hills Chief of Police Sandra Spagnoli
* Jon Bosse, Honorable Judge (First Spouse of Beverly Hills)
* Alissa Roston, Recreation and Parks Commission
* Jon Gluck, Team Beverly Hills
Pie Eating Contest Winners
First place, along with the title of “best tasting pie in Beverly Hills,” and a $200 gift certificate to Clementine went to Mary McLaren, Sherman Oaks, California for her Summer Nectarine Blueberry Pie.
Second place and $100.00 gift certificate to Clementine was awarded to Brigitte and Olympia Lifson, Beverly Hills, California, for her Amelia Bedelia’s Apple Pie.
Olympia Lifson, 9 years old, checked out the book “Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie” from the Beverly Hills children’s library many times. When Brigitte learned about the Piesta Pie Bake Contest, she told Olympia, who wanted to enter using Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie Recipe. They used Granny Smith apples and were impressed with how good the pie tasted. Brigitte’s daughter, Sofia, 11 entered a pie separately, and Brigitte learned she came in 4th place with her blueberry pie (modifying a Martha Stewart recipe for mini blueberry pies). Sofia was 1 point away from tying with the 3rd place winner. They are all starting to think about recipes for Piesta 2018!
As a side note, the girls are part of the Beverly Hills 4H Club and the 4H Club took 1st place in the “Best Dill Pickle in Beverly Hills” category during 2015’s Picklefest contest. This introduced them to the fun and excitement of entering these types of contests and the possibility of actually winning!
