A dreary summer movie season slogged on for the entertainment industry, with the number one movie — “Dunkirk” — on track to sell only $28.1 million in tickets this weekend.
Sales for the World War II epic from Christopher Nolan dropped only 44 percent over last weekend, and the Warner Bros. release is on track to sell $102.8 million in the North Ameerican market by the close of business Sunday evening, according to studio figures gathered by comScore.
Movie industry analyst Paul Dergarabedian at comScore noted that this was “another down frame, as the industry continues to chip away at a season- over-season deficit.”
“The Emoji Movie” opened in second place, with $28.1 million in projected sales. That led comScore to note there was a lack of family-friendly movies available this weekend.
The raunchy “Girls Trip” was estimated to take in $20 million on its second weekend. with $65.5 million in the bank.
“Atomic Blonde” opened with $18.6 million in sales. And in its fifth weekend, “Spider-Man: Homecoming” was on course for a $13.5 million weekend, and four-week running total of $278.4 million.
Rounding out the 10 most-viewed movies, as estimated by studios and collated by comScore, were “War For The Planet Of The Apes” ($10.4 million), “Despicable Me 3” ($7.7 million), “Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets” ($6.8 million), “Baby Driver” ($4 million) and “Wonder Woman” ($3.5 million).
