Frances Allen’s Desert Roundup—MTU Offers Musical Theatre Training For Students, Grades 8-13

The hills may not be alive with the sound of music, not yet anyway, but it is time for the summer hiatus to give way to the sounds of the 17/18 entertainment season by beginning with the performers’ first step in the process: the auditions.
For the first time in the Desert, Musical Theatre University (MTU) offers a comprehensible professional level of training and opportunities for young people in the Coachella Valley.
Founded and directed by David Green, who for the past 20 years has trained young people for careers in professional theater, Green has staged and directed more than 175 productions for professional and educational theater.
MTU is an after-school, intensive and comprehensive conservatory training ground in which any child, grades 8-13, from any private or public school in the Coachella Valley, can participate. There is no charge for students enrolled in the Palm Springs Unified School District (PSUSD); however, at least 60 percent of the number of students accepted must be enrolled in a PSUSD school. Participants are selected through an audition process.

Beginning its 19th season, the Palm Springs Gay Men’s Chorus (PSGMC) will hold open call auditions at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 29 at the Mizell Senior Center in Palm Springs.
The chorus is an auditioned, volunteer choral ensemble consisting of gay and straight-allied men of all ethnicities, dedicated to building diversity. However, the PSGMC is in special need of members of the trans community, who identify as a man and sing in the tenor or bass range.
In addition, the Chorus’ small ensemble group, “The Arrangement,” will also be auditioning, looking for those members of the trans community who identify as a man and sing in the tenor or bass range.
For more information about the PSGMC and its audition process, call 760-219-2077.

One of the Valley’s best-kept musical ensembles is the California Desert Chorale (CDC) that has begun the auditioning process for its 25th season.
The CDC is comprised of professional and amateur singers who bring a wide variety of choral and solo experience to the group.
But, remember this: the level of commitment expected is significant and should be considered before auditioning. Singers should be prepared to honor the required membership commitments, which include a weekly Monday night rehearsals from September 2017 through April 2018, with occasional Saturday morning rehearsals.
The season is also comprised of two very busy concert week schedules and occasional community service performance.
Potential members should also understand that a portion of the group’s concert repertoire is sung from memory. Therefore, each participant will require extra time and effort. In other words, you must be really committed to the CDC.
