The sequel to a dismal view of a future Los Angeles opened in the number one spot at the nation’s box offices this weekend.

“Blade Runner 2049” was on track to sell $31.5 million worth of tickets in the United States and Canada this weekend, according to studio estimates. That’s more than the original 1982 Ridley Scott production earned, said movie business analysts at comScore.

“The Mountain Between Us,” a survival story about two plane crash survivors that stars Kate Winslet, opened in second place with $10.1 million in estimated sales for Fox.

This year’s fall juggernaut — “It” — added $9.7 million in domestic sales this weekend and was on track to hit nearly $305 million domestically in four weeks of showings. Add in all the pesos, euros, rupees and other currency from the rest of the world, and “It” has dealt an estimated $603.7 million in global ticket sales.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this weekend, in the U.S. and Canada, as estimated by the studios, were “My Little Pony: The Movie” (debuting at $8.8 million), “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” ($8.1 million), “American Made” ($8 million), “The Lego Ninjago Movie” ($6.8 million), “Victoria and Abdul” ($4.1 million), “Flatliners” ($3.8 million) and “Battle Of The Sexes” ($2.4 million).
