Joan Mangum’s Society Scene—Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors Gala Raises More Than $1.3 Million, Honors Kroenke, Others

It was a lovely, uplifting evening when 800 leaders in entertainment, business, healthcare and philanthropy came together for the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors Gala at The Beverly Hilton and raised more than $1.3 million.

L.A. Rams Owner/Chairman E. Stanley Kroenke was honored with the Visionary Award, presented by Kevin Demoff, Rams COO/EVP of Football Operations.

Emmy-winning producer Gordon Gray and his wife Kristen were presented with the inaugural Luminary Award. The couple founded the Charlotte & Gwyneth Gray Foundation to Cure Batten Disease in honor of their two young daughters, both suffering from this fatal and rare disorder, for which there is currently no cure. The Grays received their award from Dr. Clive Svendsen, director of Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors Regenerative Medicine Institute, who is internationally recognized for his use of stem cell technology in researching diseases such as ALS, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Macular Degeneration, Crohn’s and diabetes.

Jim Hill, CBS sports director, served as emcee for the gala co-chaired by Don and Lisa DeBartolo Miggs, Nikki DeBartolo and Chad Chronister. Leslie Spivak is chairwoman of the board of governors.

A performance by Boyz II Men included its hits…  I’ll Make Love to You, End of the Road and Water Runs Dry as well as a special tribute to Tom Petty with a performance of Free Fallen that had the audience singing along and moving to their beat.

The AMT 2017 D.R.E.A.M. gala that will benefit Autism Works Now and the D.R.E.A.M. Alliance, which, in part, help autistic young adults to find work, will honor Beverly Hills own legendary broadcaster Larry King with its Humanitarian Award on the occasion of his 84th birthday, Sunday Nov. 11, at Montage Beverly Hills.

TV’s popular Mary Hart will emcee the event which will also salute Dr. Temple Grandin, with the Trailblazer Award, to be presented by Laura San Giacomo, and Timothy Sykes as the Visionary Entrepreneur for 2017.

The star-studded committee includes Lyn and Norman Lear, Carolyn Cohen, Alan Dershowitz, Ed Asner, Dan Aykroyd, Chris Hardwick, Hill Harper, D.J. Hughley, Holly Robinson Peete, Carl Reiner, Susan Sarandon, Robert Shapiro, Judge Judy Shendlin and Antonia Thomas. Tony-winning actor Joe Mantegna will be among celebrity supporters appearing on the stage to honor these outstanding individuals.

 Proceeds benefit Autism Movement Therapy and the Autism Works Now program for the new D.R.E.A.M. Alliance residential project with employment opportunities for people with autism and related differences.
