Theatre Forty Resident Director Bruce Gray Dies At 81

Theatre Forty of Beverly Hills is mourning the loss of company member Bruce Gray, one of its resident directors. He succumbed to cancer in Los Angeles on December 13, 2017. He was 81.

Born on September 7, 1936 in San Juan, Puerto Rico to Canadian parents, he was educated at the University of Toronto, where he received a master’s fegree. He then left for London to embark on a career as an actor.

He succeeded as a performer, appearing in 28 feature films and 140 different television shows. He counted among his most recognizable roles characters he portrayed in My Big Fat Greek Wedding (1&2), and on television, Playmakers, Murder She Wrote and Queer as Folk. He also had recurring roles on How I Met Your Mother, Falling Skies, Medium, Tour of Duty and more. He received Canada’s Gemini Award for his work on the Canadian TV series Traders. 

His stage work as an actor included the national and international tour of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, directed by Edward Albee (Philadelphia Critics Circle Award); At Circle Rep, the World Premiere of Who Killed Richard Cory?, and Hamlet (opposite William Hurt); My Fat Friend (opposite Patty Duke); The Owl and the Pussycat  (opposite Diana Sands); and, at Theatre Forty, The Good Doctor (Drama-Logue Award), Quartermaine’s Terms (L.A. Weekly Award nominee), and Medal of Honor Rag.

In recent years, he directed many plays at Theatre Forty, often works written by Canadian playwrights. His recent directing credits include Sequence, Late Company, Breath of Spring, Double Door, Perfect Timing, Flare Path, and more. He also directed for the G.A.T.E. program at Toluca Lake Elementary School.

A longtime resident of the Hollywood Hills, Gray is survived by a sister, Judy; nephew, Randy; niece, Wendy; and friend, Mike.

Per Mr. Gray’s wishes, a memorial will be private.
