By any measure you might choose, they are a trifecta of Hollywood royalty. As the movie fans were seated in their seats for a short panel discussion about the making of The Post, the opening night film of this year’s Palm Springs International Film Festival–the third-largest film festival in the country–the regal trio of Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg walked on-stage accompanied by sustained, raucous applause.

While no one needs a reason to visit Palm Springs, the presence of Streep, Hanks and Spielberg are reminders that over the 29 years of the festival, more than 90 percent of festival honorees went on to receive recognition and statuettes from the Oscars.

Also lining the one-half-football-field length of red carpet were media from around the globe, while fans snapped pictures of favorite celebrities from bleachers erected on the Jackie Lee Houston plaza across from the main entrance to the Palm Springs Convention Center.

Major benefactors, who underwrote the $2.5 million event were Jordan Schnitzer, JoAnn McGrath, Festival Chairman Harold Matzner, Helene Galen, Donna MacMillan and Gala Chairman James Houston who, in addition to providing $500,000 of underwriting, sent his own plane to Holland to pick-up 28,000 orchards previously ordered a year before the gala.
