Tuesday, July 3, is the last day that LA animal shelters offer free adoptions in an effort to clear space for the expected influx of pets who run away, fearful of fireworks. Sadly, the Fourth of July is the busiest time of the year. Pets who come into the shelter do not share the benefits of the nation’s independence, and their fate is uncertain.

If you are a pet owner, please be sure to secure your pets in a quiet place, away from the noise of the fireworks. Pets will often panic, potentially causing harm to property and themselves, if they are left outside during fireworks displays. Keep them calm and safe in an interior section of your home for the duration.

It is a tragic and all-too-common occurrence, leaving the shelters full to over-flowing and costing the lives of innocent animals. But you can help. Consider adopting a pet now, when shelters need to clear space. Not sure if you are ready for a full-time pet? Consider fostering one of these adorable and vulnerable critters.  The West Los Angeles Shelter, located at 11361 West Pico Blvd., LA 90064, urgently needs 5 fosters. Call them at 888-452-7381.

Or just volunteer or donate to help out at the shelter!
