Mark Wahlberg's action-thriller "Contraband" dominated the North American box office in its debut weekend, easily beating the 3-D release of the Disney classic "Beauty and the Beast," according to final figures released today.
"Contraband" earned $24.5 million between Friday and Sunday, while the "Beauty and the Beast" reboot earned $17.7 million, according to Hollywood.Com Box-Office.
"Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" was in third place with $11.7 million, pushing its five-week gross to $189.4 million.
The Dolly Parton-Queen Latifah musical romance "Joyful Noise" opened in fourth place with $11.3 million.
Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the role of super-sleuth in "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" finished fifth with $8.6 million.
Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were "The Devil Inside" ($8 million); "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" ($6.7 million); "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked" ($5.9 million); "War Horse" ($5.9 million); and "We Bought a Zoo" ($5.6 million).
