The California Citizens Redistricting Commission will hold the first of a series of 11 public input hearings on the first draft of the proposed congressional, legislative and Board of Equalization district maps from 6-9 p.m. tonight at Culver City City Hall.
The commission is seeking suggestions from the public on how the proposed districts can better reflect the interests of their residents, including moving boundaries, according to Rob Wilcox, the commission's communications director.
The time limit for each person testifying before the committee is expected to be two minutes, Wilcox said.
Testimony can also be submitted by email to votersfirstact@crc.ca.gov, by fax to (916) 651-5711 or by mail to Citizens Redistricting Commission, 901 P St., Suite 154-A, Sacramento, CA 95814.
The Sherman Oaks Homeowners Association has sought to have its members ask the commission today to put the entire community in the proposed West San Fernando Valley-Calabasas congressional district, instead of splitting it between two districts.
The association's specific suggestion is to make Mulholland Drive the district's southern boundary instead of Ventura Boulevard.
Another meeting is scheduled for 6-9 p.m. Friday at Rio Hondo College in Whittier.
The 14-member commission must approve the final set of maps by Aug. 15. Under the state constitution, the priorities in drawing the district maps are having districts with equal populations; complying with the federal Voting Rights Act; drawing districts that are contiguous; respecting counties, cities, communities of interest and neighborhoods to the extent possible; and drawing districts to be compact.
