Student Bicyclist Killed From Hit And Run

(CNS) Posted Thursday April 21, 2011 – 9:05am

A 17-year-old Chatsworth High School senior riding a bicycle was killed when struck from behind by a Toyota Corolla or Camry hatchback that then sped away from the scene, authorities said today.

At about 9 p.m. on Wednesday, German Alex Romero and a 17-year-old friend were riding bicycles northbound on De Soto Avenue, near Valerio Street, in Canoga Park when the Toyota hit him, Los Angeles police Officer James Whang of the Valley Traffic division said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim's friend -- who apparently was in the far right lane -- was not injured, Whang said.

Investigators were looking today for the driver of the Corolla or Camry, described as possibly gray or silver in color with moderate to severe damage to the front passenger area of the vehicle, Whang said.

Police urge anyone with information to call (818) 644-8034 or (818) 644- 8032.
