The Westboro Baptist Church arrived in Beverly Hills on Monday afternoon, but it met some opposition in the form of Beverly Hills High School students.

Nearly 70 BHHS students, parents and other community members turned out to fight back against the Westboro Baptist Church’s protest outside of Beverly Hills High at the intersection of Durant and Moreno Drive.

The Westboro Baptist Church, holding signs claiming God hates everything from drugs to homosexuals, picketed outside the high school for about an hour, from 2 to 3 p.m., as BHHS students were gradually being dismissed from school. The church members stood on the street corner holding their signs, while singing well-known pop songs with the lyrics altered to mirror the group’s beliefs.

Beverly Hills Police had several officers on hand, including Chief Dave Snowden, to help keep things orderly and separate the students from the Westboro Baptist Church protest.

BHHS students gathered with signs and chants in opposition to the Westboro Baptist Church. Students chanted “Beverly Equal And Free!”, “We Are One!” and “Only One Race – The Human Race!”
