Beverly Hills News – Special City Council Meeting On School Security Tonight At 7 p.m.

Updated: Tuesday, March 6, 2018 – 4:00 PM

Beverly Hills Mayor Lili Bosse and Beverly Hills Police Chief Sandra Spagnoli are set to spearhead a special City Council meeting on school security tonight at City Hall starting at 7 p.m. – and the community is invited to attend.

A press release sent out yesterday evening by the City stated that additional security measures on school campuses would be at the forefront of tonight’s discussion.

“The safety of our children and the staff who educate them is a top priority for our City,” Bosse is quoted as saying in the release. “This temporary proposal for additional security is the right thing to do, to enhance the security of our schools and to ensure that students and staff feel that they are safe on our campuses.”

Some of the benefits of the proposed program include:

  • -  High police visibility around campus.

  • -  Open communication between police and students, faculty and parents.

  • -  Collaboration with Beverly Hills Unified School District administrators on contemporary training issues (e.g. campus safety, bullying, cyber-stalking, shaming, social media awareness).

  • -  Improving students’ school performance and attendance.

  • -  Encouraging students to choose a lifestyle free from crime, drugs, gangs and violence.

  • -  Providing students with exemplary role models and/or mentors.

Spagnoli is expected to present a security plan at the meeting that supplements the School Resource Officer program currently in place at Beverly Hills public schools and assigns additional officers as a temporary measure until the Beverly Hills Unified School District is able to implement adequate security measures.

The special meeting will take place tonight, Tuesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers before the regular City Council meeting.
