Small Business Saturday is Nov. 25, 9 a.m.- 1 p.m. and, the day after what is traditionally called “Black Friday,” when the official Christmas shopping season begins. First observed in 2010, Small Business Saturday is the counterpart to Cyber Monday – when all the deals are online. This event encourages shoppers to patronize brick and mortar stores in their local communities, to support businesses and promote a healthy business environment.
American Express publicized this, their trademark event, using social media and PR, and many municipalities throughout the country have taken it up. The hashtag #SmallBusinessSaturday and #FollowFriday are used so shoppers can highlight their favorite businesses. Many retailers offer great bargains and the campaign has generated followers on Facebook throughout the e-commerce universe.
