While the Beverly Hills Board of Education majority may have said no to accessing Measure E school-building funds at Tuesday’s formal meeting, it united to approve an agenda item requesting the immediate closure due to seismic vulnerability of Peters Auditorium at Beverly Hills High School, in addition to auditoriums at Hawthorne and El Rodeo effective Jan. 1, 2016.
“Some Board members continue to have an inability to see the reality for what it is,” said Board member Lisa Korbatov, who voted in favor of no longer allowing the auditoriums’ seating areas to be used with the knowledge that the ceilings were vulnerable to collapse. Board President Brian Goldberg and Board member Lewis Hall also voted in support of closing the three BHUSD auditoriums.
“Our buildings are unsafe, our kids need to be removed, and the board has taken action to do that,” added Korbatov. “Board members have a duty first and foremost to safeguard the well being of our students and staff.”
