On Monday, May 14, 2018, a full field of 124 golfers will take to the fairways of the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades to raise funds for the students at the Blind Children’s Center. Now in its 26th year, the Tom Sullivan Blind Children’s Center Celebrity Golf Classic continues to be a success.
A world-renowned author, actor, and singer who is totally blind himself, Sullivan has been a dedicated supporter of the Center for nearly three decades now. The event’s title sponsor is John Hancock Insurance, with additional key sponsorship from the Windsong Trust, Lisa & Steve Hansen, Hoya Vision, Econ One, GTT, Paul Olsen/Go Fan Yourself, and ARES Management.
This year’s guest of honor and Spirit of Light Awardee will be USC varsity football player, Jake Olson. Olson was diagnosed with retinoblastoma at 10 months-old causing him to have surgery to remove his left eye. Nearly 12 years later, he received more tragic news and lost his right eye. But Olson never let that stop him from pursuing his dreams – playing Division 1 football. Now, at the age of 22, he’s achieved that. As USC’s long snapper, he made national headlines when he completed a live snap during USC’s 2017 game against Western Michigan.
Founded in 1938, the Blind Children’s Center serves approximately 100 students and 500 family members each year. The Center’s programs are designed to optimize each child’s development through a comprehensive approach that is specifically adapted to the needs of each student. Located in the heart of Hollywood, the Center is a full inclusion program, with sighted children in each classroom to promote peer modeling, social skills and empathy.
