Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” stormed to a $50.5 million opening weekend to capture first place at the North American box office this weekend, according to estimates provided Sunday by the industry tracking group comScore.
The World War II epic starring Tom Hardy and Harry Styles opened in IMAX, 70mm, 35mm and standard digital formats.
Second place went to the comedy “Girls Trip,” which opened with $30.3 million.
In third place was “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” which took in $22 million in its third weekend in release.
Fourth place went to “War For The Planet Of The Apes” with $20.4 million in its second weekend in theaters.
“Valerian And The City of a Thousand Planets” was fifth with an opening weekend of $17 million.
Rounding out the 10 most popular movies in the United States and Canada this weekend, as estimated by the studios and collated by comScore, were “Despicable Me 3″ ($12.7 million), “Baby Driver” ($6 million), “The Big Sick” ($5 million), “Wonder Woman” ($4.6 million) and “Wish Upon” ($2.4 million).
