For those who lived it, the Summer of Love is hard to forget.
For those too young to have experienced it, the stories are hard to believe.
Next Thursday in Beverly Hills, some famous faces will join Stephen Wise Temple to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love at Concerts on Cañon.
The concert is Thursday, August 17 at 6 p.m.
The Summer of Love was a social phenomenon in the summer of 1967, where hundreds of thousands of self-proclaimed hippies descended upon San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, among many other U.S. cities.
The counterculture celebrations – attended by many who were opposed to the Vietnam War and suspicious of government – were highlighted by parties and concerts.
Next Thursday, Stephen Wise Temple’s Rabbi Yoshi Zweiback, Cantor Nathan Lam, Cantor Emma Lutz and Music Director David Kates will be joined by The 5th Dimension’s Florence LaRue and legendary singer Freda Payne to belt out some of the biggest hits from the 1960s.
The concert will be performed again the next night at Stephen Wise Temple, Friday, August 18 at 5 p.m. The evening will include pizza, activities and a Shabbat service. Harvey Kubernik, author of 1967: A Complete Rock Music History of the Summer of Love will be the guest speaker.
Entrance to Concerts on Cañon is free and parking is available in nearby Cañon and Beverly Drive lots. To register for the Summer of Love Shabbat Dinner, visit https://wise.shulcloud.com/event/summer-of-love-shabbat-dinner.html.
