Sydney Segal, one of the most decorated and prolific athletes to attend Beverly Hills High School (class of 2013), has graduated from Columbia University where she majored in political science.

The Beverly Hills native, who also attended Hawthorne School, was a five-time All American and California state champion in cross country and track while at BHHS.

She continued her multi-team career while attending the Ivy League school and spent all her summers traveling abroad, becoming fluent in five languages.

Sydney will be spending a “gap” year working in Manhattan before seeking admission to law school.

She is the daughter of Beverly Hills attorney Gregory Segal (BHHS class of 1983) and Giula Segal.

Beverly Hills resident Gia Gershon-Friedberg, daughter of longtime resident and BHHS graduate Janine Gershon, was honored with the University High School 2017 Jack Maskowitz Principal’s Award.

Named in honor of the late University High School Principal (1984-93), the award is presented to a senior selected by University Principal Eric Davidson and grants a $1,000 scholarship.

Selection is based on a student’s patient’s unwillingness to compromise integrity and disciple and the ability to lead by doing the right thing, rather that what is popular, Davidson said.

Gershon-Friedberg, also the current student body president, was also captain of the girls varsity soccer team and on the championship girls varsity volleyball team. She won the 2017 Excellence in Leadership award, as well, was awarded the Distinguished Athlete Award by the United States Marine Corps, and made the honor roll.

Gershon-Friedberg will attend the University of Oregon in the fall.
