(CNS) – A second-alarm fire that broke out Tuesday at a Malibu apartment complex damaged three units, killed three pets and left one firefighter with minor injuries.

There was no immediate word on what sparked the blaze that forced the evacuation of the two-story building at 23901 Civic Center Way.

“One firefighter suffered a first-degree burn and three pets were killed in the fire,” Los Angeles County Fire Department Inspector Richard Licon told City News Service.

The fire, which was reported at 8:07 a.m., was knocked down at 9:17 a.m. by nearly five dozen firefighters, he said.

Malibu/Lost Hills Station sheriff’s deputies Matt Brantley and Tracy Koerner rushed into one of the apartments to save a dachshund who ran under its owner’s bed before smoke overtook the apartment, said Deputy Caroline Rodriguez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau

Koerner attempted to save one of the other dogs that died in the fire, Rodriguez said.
