Look beyond the art works or the incomparable manicured grounds and you will soon realize that The Annenberg Foundation Trust at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage is noted for bringing government and business leaders together in a collaborate endeavor to address the world’s problems.

Therefore, the selection of a new foundation president was met with great interest by local residents who attended a “meet and greet” at Sunnylands and listened attentively to Trust board member Diane Deshong as she introduced Ambassador David J. Lane, as new president of Sunnylands.

It’s no job for the faint-hearted; and Ambassador Lane has the right credentials. He served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Agencies in Rome as well as leading policy and advocacy efforts at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Under Lane’s leadership, Sunnylands’ supporters can look forward to more historic summits such as the one between President Obama and Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013 and the U.S.-ASEAN leaders’ summit in 2016.

Among the nine desert resort destination cities which together form what is commonly known as the Coachella Valley, the slow-paced town of La Quinta, nestled at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains between the cities of Indio and Indian Wells, does not get the attention, (or business), as do the larger, more well-known cities to the West.

The city currently has one luxury hotel and hosts a popular art fair in the spring, but this is all about to change thanks, in part, to the efforts of a familiar name among Beverly Hills hotels: the Montage.

About 15 years ago, the city of La Quinta, through the use of redevelopment funds, acquired 525 acres of vacant land on which to build a top-tier golf resort with luxury amenities called SilverRock; but money dried up and well … you know the rest. There is a golf course, but no resort, until now.

However, that is all about to change, as the city has designated Montage International as the operator of two luxury-branded hotels at SilverRock: an upper-scale Montage Hotel with 140 rooms and a lesser-scale, but still high-end, 200-room “lifestyle hotel” named The Pendry, a Montage International-owned brand.

Both hotels are expected to open in late 2019.
