Extraordinary Families, a nonprofit dedicated to improving the lives of youngsters and families in child welfare, hosted its second awards gala at the Beverly Hilton.
The evening honored director/writer/producer Lee Daniels with the Visionary Award; NBC’s This Is Us executive producers Jess Rosenthal and Dan Fogelman with the Luminary Award; and the late legendary music manager Howard Kaufman with the Champion Award. The latter shaped the careers of Chicago, the Eagles, Aerosmith, Stevie Nicks, Don Henley, Jimmy Buffett, Steely Dan, Janet Jackson and many others.
Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment, Gary Newman, chairman/CEO of the Fox Television Group, and Craig Fruin were the presenters.
Foster parents Kim Kopp and Lisa McFann, who have fostered four children and adopted two of them during the past four years, received the Sylvia Fogelman Founder’s Award.
Inside Edition’s Victoria Recano welcomed the 400 guests and introduced Gala Chair Brooke Kaufman Halsband and her committee: Rick Bieber, Leo Bolanos, Emily Brown, Lisa Kring and Shauna Shalom.
India Carney of The Voice and American Idol’s Haley Reinhart provided the entertainment.
A moving highlight was a spoken word segment featuring young adults and former foster youth Alexis Valle, Edana Jones and Steven Barbee. The trio each spoke poignantly about their journey through the foster care system. They thanked EF and the UP4Youth program which has helped them prepare for the future. “We are strong. We are determined. We are resilient. Extraordinary Families is helping us build our futures,” they all ended in unison.
