King Kong climbed to the top of the box office mountain this weekend, as “Kong: Skull Island” scored a $61 million debut.

The latest iteration of the big ape saga performed much better than analysts had predicted, said Paul Dergarabedian at comScore.

In second place, the Wolverine character in “Logan” was on track to ring up another $37.9 million this weekend, for a $152.7 million take over the past week and a half.

Studio estimates for ticket sales in the United States and Canada show that “Get Out” was in third place, on track to sell $21 million in tickets this weekend. Over nearly three weeks, it has amassed $111 million in sales.

Rounding out the 10 most-popular movies this week, as estimated by the studios, were “The Shack” ($10 million), “The Lego Batman Movie” ($7.8 million), “Before I Fall” ($3.1 million), “Hidden Figures” ($2.8 million), “John Wick: Chapter Two” ($2.7 million), “The Metropolitan Opera: La Traviata” (a one-night live event that grossed $1.8 million) and “La La Land” ($1.8 million).
