National Weather Service Issues Red Flag Warning – LAFD Issues Red Flag Parking Restrictions

Posted: Monday, December 4, 2017 – 4:59 PM

A report from the National Weather Service warns that strong Santa Ana winds will reduce humidity from 5-15% and that there is an extreme fire danger. It also states:

Moderate to strong Santa Ana winds are expected
across Ventura and Los Angeles today through Thursday. During the
peak of this offshore wind event tonight and Tuesday, wind gusts
between 50 and 70 mph are likely across wind-prone areas of
Ventura and Los Angeles counties with isolated gusts up to 80 mph
in the mountains. As the Santa Ana winds develop, relative
humidity will drop into the teens and single digits with poor
overnight recoveries. So, an extended period of critical fire
weather conditions is expected for Ventura and Los Angeles
counties.

This will likely be the strongest and longest duration Santa Ana
wind event we have seen so far this season. If fire ignition
occurs, there will be the potential for very rapid fire spread,
long range spotting, and extreme fire behavior. Long range
computer models are showing the possibility that the Santa Ana
winds could persist into Friday or Saturday, which may require
the extension of the Red Flag Warning.

The City of Los Angeles has declared that Red Flag No Parking Restrictions to be in effect starting 8:00 AM on 12/05/2017 and will remain in effect until further notice.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued by the National Weather Service for much of Los Angeles County — that includes the Bel-Air area — due to gusty Santa Ana winds and low humidity.

A Red Flag Warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now, or will shortly. A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures will create extreme fire behavior.

Required action for Bel-Air community:  No parking vehicles in posted locations within the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, vigilance with fire, grills, etc, due to heat and/or high winds, and call 911 if any fires in the area are seen,
