The Flaming Lips and Klangstof are set to perform tonight at the Ace Theatre. Fresh after the release of their latest release earlier this year - Oczy Mlody – tonight’s sold-out Flaming Lips performance is expected to attract a colorful audience in support of the band’s 30-year career.
“Somewhere in the haze lurks their old knack for writing great, off-kilter pop songs that reflect and escape the bewildering world around us,” says The Guardian of the album, while The Boston Globe has noted that “The Lips return with a moody, industrial, and hypnotic CD that’s probably what Major Tom would be listening to, sitting in his tin can.”
After making their Coachella debut this year, Amsterdam-based alternative band Klangstof joins the Lips to open tonight’s performance. Recently named Best Alternative Act at the Edison Awards in Holland (the Dutch equivalent of the Grammy Awards), Klangstof frontman Koen van de Wardt said he was energized to once again perform with The Flaming Lips this evening.
“They were maybe the most amazing, nicest band I’ve ever played with,” de Wardt said. “I was just really inspired.”
Klangstof, a Dutch indie rock band with a Scandinavian twist, rose to fame two years ago after de Wardt released the single Hostage, subsequently forming his four-man band. The song, like the bulk of those in Klangstof’s oeuvre, evokes a cross between Radiohead and Sigur Ros.
