The manager of the Preuss Station post office was shot in a hand as he was locking up in the rear of the building and saw a suspect trying to break in tonight.

The shooting occurred about 8:10 p.m. at Pico Boulevard and La Jolla Avenue in the South Carthay neighborhood, two blocks east of La Cienega Boulevard, said Los Angeles Police Department Officer Karen Rayner.

The manager got the gun but the suspect escaped.

The precise location of the shooting remains to be determined, Rayner said.
